Clinical Psychologist – Children’s Residential Care
Excel Recruitment, hiring on behalf of our client, seeks a dedicated Clinical Psychologist on a permanent basis in County Laois, to support children and adolescents in residential care who have experienced trauma or other adverse experiences. This client is looking for this candidate to be part time or full time.
The Clinical Psychologist will work closely with adult carers and other multidisciplinary team members to create and implement trauma-informed care plans, supporting each child’s emotional and psychological well-being. The role requires a flexible, compassionate individual who can work effectively with both children and their caregivers, promoting resilience and healing.

Responsibilities of this Clinical Psychologist job include:
- Perform thorough, trauma-informed psychological assessments to identify trauma, emotional challenges, behavioural issues, and mental health needs.
- Design and deliver individualised and group therapeutic interventions using evidence-based methods, including Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) and CBT.
- Work closely with care teams, social workers, and medical and educational professionals to develop child-centred, comprehensive care plans.
- Engage in multidisciplinary team meetings to review case formulations, treatment strategies, and ongoing progress.
- Provide psychoeducation to caregivers and residential staff on trauma, attachment, and developmental needs to enhance care approaches.
- Support service development efforts to ensure trauma-informed, evidence-based care practices.
- Participate in research projects focused on trauma in residential care, contributing to improved service delivery and policy development.
- Uphold strict standards for safeguarding, professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical boundaries in all interactions.
What you need to be considered for this Clinical Psychologist job:
- Doctorate in Clinical Psychology recognised by the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI), with full PSI registration
- Minimum of 2 years post-qualification experience working with children and adolescents, ideally in residential care or similar settings
- Experience with trauma, abuse, and attachment-related issues, as well as trauma-specific assessments
- Training in evidence-based therapies for trauma, such as TF-CBT or EMDR
- High competence in managing complex cases involving emotional and behavioural difficulties in children
- Recognised university degree or diploma; for international qualifications, a certificate of validation from the Department of Health is required
- Full clean driver’s license and use of a car
