Job Overview:

As a Senior Medical Scientist in Microbiology, you will lead the service delivery and ongoing development of the hospital’s accredited Microbiology laboratory.

You will play a key role in ensuring the highest standards of diagnostic accuracy, efficiency, and patient care. This hospital fosters a warm and collaborative culture where your contributions will be highly valued.
You will contribute to the provision of an efficient, effective, cost-effective and quality Laboratory service to serve the needs of users and patients of the hospital.

You will work collaboratively with the laboratory, haemovigilance and hospital teams to ensure the fitness-for-purpose of the end-to-end blood transfusion service

You will communicate regularly with the team, line manager and lead Consultant, keeping them informed of developments, challenges and highlighting opportunities for improvements.

You will be responsible for ensuring that the Microbiology service is delivered to agreed standards and compliant with statutory, accreditation and organisational requirements.

The candidate:

We are seeking a highly competent and adaptable Senior Medical Scientist with extensive experience in Microbiology.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in Microbiology in a hospital laboratory , you will have proven experience in problem-solving, and staff supervision.

You will bring excellent technical knowledge, outstanding communication skills, and the ability to thrive under pressure.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • CORU-registered (or evidence of application in progress) Medical Scientist and eligible for Fellowship of the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine.
  • Masters degree or Masters degree-level qualification or equivalent in a relevant subject.
  • At least four years’ experience in Microbiology since qualification.
  • Experience in service development and ISO15189 accreditation.
  • The ability and commitment to lead and develop a multi-disciplinary team using behaviours consistent with the organisation’s values.
  • An organised, methodical and structured approach to work and excellent attention to detail.
  • Initiative, flexibility and problem-solving skills.
  • Flexible, innovative, and committed to achieving team and organizational goals.
  • Strong focus on patient care, quality, and laboratory excellence.
  • Experience with risk management and quality assurance.
  • Experience with JCI hospital accreditation (desirable).
